Where the savings come from
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, windows are a major source of unwanted heat gain in summer. In Houston, that means the glass is often the thing making your AC work hardest. ENERGY STAR certifies windows by climate zone, and in hot southern climates the most important number is how well the glass blocks solar heat.
What makes the difference
- Low-E glass: a thin coating that reflects heat while letting light through. This is the biggest factor in a hot climate. See best windows for Texas heat.
- The SHGC number: the solar heat gain coefficient on the window’s label. Lower means less of the sun’s heat gets in.
- The U-factor: how well the whole window insulates. Lower is better.
- Frames: vinyl frames don’t conduct heat the way old aluminum frames do.
- Installation: a well-rated window still leaks air if the opening isn’t sealed properly.
When you’ll notice it most
- Replacing single-pane or aluminum-frame windows
- Windows with failed seals (fog between the panes)
- Rooms on the west or south side that never cool down
- Large glass areas that take direct afternoon sun
If your windows are fairly new double-pane Low-E units in good shape, replacing them for energy alone usually isn’t the best use of your money, and I’ll tell you that.
Comfort counts too
Many homeowners notice the comfort first: less heat radiating off the glass, fewer drafts and less outside noise. Laminated impact glass also helps with noise and blocks most UV, which helps keep floors and furniture from fading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do new windows lower your electric bill?
They can, especially when they replace single-pane glass, aluminum frames or windows with failed seals. In Houston most of the benefit comes from blocking solar heat, so the air conditioner runs less. Actual savings depend on the house.
What should I look for on a window label in Houston?
Look for ENERGY STAR certification for the southern climate zone and a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC), which means less of the sun’s heat gets through. A low U-factor is also better.
Is Low-E glass worth it in Texas?
In a hot climate, Low-E glass is one of the most effective upgrades because it reflects heat while letting light through.
How much will I save with new windows?
It depends on your current windows, which way they face, your home’s insulation and how you use your AC, so Built by Revitalize does not promise a number. A free in-home consultation will show whether your windows are worth replacing for energy.
